Last month, Google announced that it will merge Google Duo with Meet and that the app will have all of the features of both apps. This was Google's way of doing away with duplicate apps that serve the same purpose. While Google Duo will soon be replaced by Google Meet later this year, the first evidence of the move is now evident.
The folks over at 9To5Google spotted a new card titled ‘Duo is getting even better' within the Google Duo app after the latest update. It says, “Your Duo app will become Meet, with a new name and icon, and more features like background effects.” This new card is visible to a small number of users and appears in the latest Google Duo app (version 169.0.459621665.duo.android_20220612.16_p6).
On the card, there are two buttons, Got it and Learn more. When tapping Learn more button, it takes you to a support article that lists all the changes to Google Duo. And when you tap on the card, you now have options to ‘Create a new meeting' and ‘Schedule in Google Calendar.' These features are from Google Meet.
Moreover, users who have received this upgrade are getting features including virtual backgrounds, in-meeting text chat, real-time closed captions, and up to 100 (up from 32) participants.
