Google Photos to replace Library with Collections on Android

Two years ago, Google tried to revamp the Library section in the Google Photos app, but it rolled back that redesign. Now, the company seems to be taking another stab at redesigning your Google Photos library, but this time, it will be called ‘Collections.'

Google Photos app to replace Library tab with Collections

Google revealed two days ago that it plans to replace the Library tab in Google Photos with Collections to “find what you need, faster.” While the tab uses the same logo as the library, it offers quick access to Favorites and Trash folders. The rest of the sections are arranged in a 2×2 grid layout based on your usage.

The existing ‘Photos On Device' folder will be replaced with ‘On This device.' This folder shows you the images and videos (grid format) saved locally on your smartphone or tablet. This might irritate some users, as accessing images and videos stored on your device needs one extra tap.

There are additional sections called Albums, Archive, Documents, Locked, People, Recently Added, Screenshots, and Videos. There is no longer a folder called Utilities in the app. All those utilities now have separate sections: Free Up Space, Import Photos, Locked Folder, Make A New Creation, Manage Photo Frames, and Move Photos To Archive.

Google says the new feature should be visible to most smartphone and tablet users on Android and iOS in the coming days. If you haven't received the new Collections tab in the Google Photos app on your device, try installing the latest software update if it is available on your Galaxy device.
