As you may have heard, even if you don't plan on replacing your Galaxy A53 anytime soon, Samsung entered a new era of firmware support earlier this year. When it introduced the Galaxy S24, Samsung rocked the mobile world by announcing that it would support the 2024 flagship with new OS upgrades and security patches for seven years.
But as great as that sounds, not every Galaxy phone will enjoy this treatment. Your Galaxy A53 is certainly not on the list of seven OS upgrades, and neither is the latest Galaxy A55. For now, this treatment is reserved for Samsung's best, so the question is, how many more will your Galaxy A53 receive?
Here's all you need to know if you lost count of the number of updates your Galaxy A53 got so far and are unsure what level of support you should expect from Samsung moving forward.
Two down, two more to go
Your Galaxy A53 was announced in March 2022 and shipped with Android 12. It is now upgradable to Android 14 and One UI 6.1, which means that, in total, Samsung sent two major OS upgrades its way.
Luckily, the Galaxy A53 was released only a month after Samsung upgraded its software update policy from three to four major OS releases. That happened in February 2022.
With that in mind, the Galaxy A53 received Android 13 and 14, and barring any unforeseen extreme circumstances, your phone will receive the upcoming Android 15 and Android 16 updates (and accompanying One UI upgrades) down the line.
Google will release Android 15 this year and Android 16 next year, so your Galaxy A53 will keep up with the times for about two more years.
After that, once Android OS upgrades stop, you'll still have at least one more year of security patches to enjoy. On paper, Samsung promised at least five years of security patches for your Galaxy A53, which means you're covered for at least three more years and into 2027.
Story continues after the video…
At the moment, the Galaxy A53 appears to be getting a new security patch every month. However, it probably won't be supported with monthly security updates until 2027, and at some point — likely in its fourth or fifth year on the market — your phone will be demoted to quarterly patches.
Time will tell, but for now, firmware support is among the last reasons why you may want to replace your Galaxy A53 if that thought ever crossed your mind. Relatively timely updates are among the best of its qualities you can still enjoy.
