Tae-moon Roh was appointed as the new boss for Samsung Mobile earlier this year. He took over the job from DJ Koh who continues to serve as the CEO of Samsung's IT and mobile communications business. He stepped into the role at a time when the world hadn't fully realized how badly the COVID19 pandemic would shake things up.

We have all had to adjust to this “new normal” in recent months. Working, traveling, socializing and even grocery shopping is no longer the way we have known it to be. Imagine leading a business like Samsung Mobile during these uncertain times. Not only is it crucial to the Samsung Group, but it also directly impacts the lives of countless people across the globe.

Samsung feels the need to innovate more than ever before

In a wide-ranging editorial that touches upon several different topics, TM Roh talks about how technology has a critical role in this new era which he considers the “Next Normal.” It powers distance learning for students who are unable to return to classrooms, enables you to keep up with your fitness regimen at home and even enjoy online concerts. All this and more has been enabled by mobile technology.

Samsung has worked with its partners to improve connectivity for users. It has worked with Google to optimize video calls, Microsoft to increase compatibility between Windows PCs and Galaxy phones, Netflix and Spotify to offer enhanced entertainment options. It will expand its gaming partnership with Xbox to give users even more to do on their devices.

Roh says that Samsung nows feels a “true sense of urgency” to give people new ways to communicate, work and connect so that society can continue to move forward. Hence the five new “power devices” that Samsung will be unveiling at its upcoming event. While obviously not named in his piece, these new devices will include the Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Tab S7/S7+, Galaxy Buds Live and the Galaxy Watch 3.

Roh mentions that Samsung has “super-charged” its product line and invested significantly in R&D over the last six months. Samsung remains committed to rolling out bold innovations and developing more ground-breaking products like foldable smartphones. It's evident that foldables are not just an experiment for Samsung and it's going to take the lead on this.

He also highlights Samsung's operational agility that enabled the company to reimagine its upcoming devices so that they would better support users in these times. Samsung will stick with the pillars of innovation, collaboration and agility through the Next Normal and beyond.

The company will be showing off the fruits of its labor on August 5 at its first virtual Galaxy Unpacked that's going to be broadcasting live from South Korea.
