Samsung popularized the clamshell foldable phones with its Galaxy Z Flip series. That design, with the 22:9 aspect ratio display, has become synonymous with this form factor. While there have been a few contenders, none have really challenged the perception of a foldable flip phone that the Galaxy Z Flip series set.
Until today, that is. Huawei just unveiled the Pura X, a product that had been teased for some time but is finally official. It's a clamshell foldable flip phone with a twist, it has a wider 16:10 aspect ratio foldable display, making it seem like a Galaxy Z Flip is being unfolded to reveal a smaller Galaxy Z Fold.
Pura X blends the best of both foldable form factors
Nevermind the 3.5-inch cover display that's almost twice as large as the Galaxy Z Flip 6‘s. The 6.3-inch internal display has a 16:10 aspect ratio, giving it more screen real estate than most other devices in this same form factor.
The significance of this device doesn't end here. It's also the first to come with Huawei's HarmonyOS 5 out of the box. Huawei's access to Google services has been cut off since 2019 and the company has since improved its homegrown OS. The latest version that the Pura X runs reportedly no longer uses any code from the open-source version of Android.
No wonder on the chipset this phone is using but it does have a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 40-megapixel ultra-wide, and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3.5x optical zoom. There's a 4,720mAh battery in the device with support for 60W wired fast charging.
The Huawei Pura X will certainly force Samsung fans to reimagine what a clamshell flip phone can be. It blends the best elements of both a clamshell and a book-style foldable phone into a truly unique product that will stand out on the shelves alongside any number of foldable flip phones you may line up against it.
Huawei has only launched the Pura X in China right now with prices starting at 7,499 Chinese yuan or $1,037. It hasn't said if the device will be sold in global markets as well.
