In a post on X/Twitter, the VP of MR/VR at Meta, Mark Rabkin, has revealed that Meta has requested Apple to allow the Quest headset (most likely the Quest 3) to be an AirPlay receiver, which would allow people to play content from their Apple devices, such as iPhone, iPad, and Mac, to the Meta Quest headsets wirelessly.
The Meta Quest lacks applications for many media streaming platforms, and the ones that are available on the headset are lackluster, missing out on many features. The ability to play content from Apple devices to the Meta Quest headset would compensate for the lack of those apps and the lackluster ones as Apple devices have high-quality apps, and people can use those apps to play content on the MR headset.
The new feature would allow the Quest 3 to compete with the Apple Vision Pro in a better way. This month, the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg tried the Apple Vision Pro and said that the Meta Quest 3 is a better MR headset overall, irrespective of price. It’s also worth mentioning that last month, Meta brought back support for Chromecast in the Quest headsets after removing it from the device in December 2023.
