New drawings show what Samsung’s XR headset could look like

It's been known for a while now that Samsung is working on an XR headset of its own that would rival the Apple Vision Pro. The company hasn't revealed much information about the device but it did confirm a while back that it's working with Qualcomm and Google on extended reality products.

New drawings have emerged from a patent filing that show what an XR headset from Samsung could look like. They provide a vague idea of how the product may be designed to fulfill the objective to providing an immersive XR experience.

Samsung's XR headset will take on the Apple Vision Pro

Patently Mobile has spotted a patent application from Samsung that was published in Europe last week. It highlights an XR wearable device that has two separate housings, one on the front and one on the back, with both accommodating separate electronic components.

The mockups show the headset resting snugly on a user's face, held securely in placing through multiple fastening members and adjustment units. Documents accompanying the filing mention that the display module of this device may have a touch sensor that can detect touch or a pressure sensor that can measure how much force the touch generates.

The device may also include speakers, various sensors, cameras, haptic feedback, and other modules. AI would feature heavily on the device through neural networks, including deep neural and recurrent neural networks. Another patent application provided a glimse of what the controllers for this headset may look like.

It's not going to be precisely this product that materializes whenever Samsung launches its XR headset, but the patent application does provide us with some idea of what Samsung's thought process is as it further develops the extended reality device.

What we do know, as it was revealed by Qualcomm's CEO recently, that this won't be the rumored XR device that comes first. That's actually a pair of AI-powered smart glasses that Samsung is likely going to launch as an accessory to its phones late next year.
