While we're eagerly waiting for One UI 7 to land on more phones, a new Google Play system update is making its way onto some Galaxy devices. The availability of Play system updates for Samsung users is, as usual, unpredictable.
Here is what we know. Google has rolled out the March 2025 Play System update, but we're now beginning to spot the February Play System update on some of our Galaxy phones.
Moments ago, we upgraded one of our Galaxy S24+ units to the February 1 Google Play System update. Previously, this device ran on the September update.
However, we could not obtain the February (or March, for that matter) Google Play System update on another Galaxy S24 unit, which is stuck on the October patch.
Likewise, we found no new update for the Galaxy S25 series, which also runs on the October Play System update. We had identical results when we tried updating the Galaxy A56.
All in all, the availability of Google's updates feels somewhat random, but if you want to check if a new version is available for your Galaxy device, you can follow these steps:
Open the Settings app on your phone, access Security and privacy, go to Updates, and tap Google Play system update.
As for why the availability of Google Play System updates seems somewhat random for Galaxy phones, that's still a mystery.
Play System updates exist to allow Google to update core system modules on Android 10 and later and ship critical security patches without updating the OS, or in this case, One UI. These System updates bypass carriers and OEMs.
At the end of the day, you should always make sure your Galaxy phone runs on the latest security patch offered by Samsung. And if you want to be extra cautious, check for new Google Play System updates, but don't lose sleep if your Samsung phone doesn't have access to Google's latest package.
