Earlier today, a rumor emerged that Samsung's mysterious second Galaxy Z Fold model for 2024 won't be called Z Fold 6 Slim or Z Fold 6 Ultra but Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. The source, @evleaks, is now following up with more details about this mysterious Special Edition foldable phone, particularly its dimensions.
According to Evan Blass, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition has a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8-inch foldable display. Furthermore, the when measured on its side, the phone's dimensions are 10.6mm when folded and 4.9mm when unfolded, presumably at its thinnest point.
For reference, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6, which you can already buy, has a 13.4mm profile when folded shut and measures 6.1mm when unfolded open.
Previous reports from other sources suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim would be 11mm thick when folded, but it now looks like those measurements may have been off.
In any case, if these latest leaked specifications are on point, that would make the so-called Special Edition Galaxy Z Fold the thinnest Samsung foldable phone ever made, beating the existing Fold and Flip devices by a significant margin.
The Special Edition foldable from Samsung still wouldn't hold a world record or beat the thinnest foldable phones from Chinese rivals. Nevertheless, as a general rule, Samsung tends to take durability into consideration more than many other rival OEMs, so perhaps that is why the company doesn't seem to care about developing the absolute thinnest device. Even so, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition may end up exceeding the industry's earlier expectations.
Other reports say Samsung's mysterious foldable phone may use titanium and boast an upgraded 5MP UPC (Under-Panel Camera).
Unfortunately, we haven't heard any other news about Samsung's release plans for the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. And so far, all signs have pointed to a limited release in just two select markets, excluding the USA and Europe. Let's hope that's not the case. We'll keep you posted as soon as we find out more. The device will supposedly go official in Korea on September 25.
