Samsung is the undisputed king when it comes to foldable smartphones that are readily available to the masses. The game just went out of reach for other players in the market, thanks to last year's Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 devices. In fact, thanks to these devices, Samsung came out as the top foldable smartphone brand in 2021.
While there are other options available, such as the OPPO Find N and the Huawei Mate X2, these devices aren't accessible outside of China. But it seems like that is going to change soon. Because in an interview with Android Central, OnePlus has hinted that it is working on a foldable smartphone.
After shedding some information about how OnePlus would bring a cleaner software experience with the upcoming Oxygen OS 13, based on the Android 13 OS, the company also shared an interesting tidbit about its future prospects.
We may finally see a OnePlus-branded foldable phone in 2022 or 2023
Notably, OnePlus software lead Gary Chen said that the company is collaborating with Google on its next major update. Moreover, he added that upcoming foldable and flagship smartphones will take advantage of the new features that will be introduced with Oxygen OS 13.
Oxygen OS 13 will launch alongside Android 13 this fall, and it will bring all the Android 12L underlying features. These features make the OS suitable for large screen devices such as foldable smartphones. So, going by the hint Chen shared, OnePlus's foldable could very well take the advantage of Android OS's new foldable features.
When similar questions were asked of company founder Pete Lau, he refrained from talking specifically about a future foldable phone. However, he has hinted at new areas of collaboration with Google.
Will a OnePlus foldable be a solid threat for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3? Could it beat the device on price? These are all questions that nobody has the answers to right now.
