None of Samsung's foldables, not even the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, have an in-display fingerprint sensor. That may be the case for their successors. According to the latest report by BusinessKorea, Samsung will not be using the in-display fingerprint technology on its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 phones.
This is quite surprising because, as per several media outlets and industry sources, it was speculated that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4, would include an in-display fingerprint scanner. This speculation was based on the patent Samsung filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
However, the upcoming fourth-generation foldables will continue to have a fingerprint sensor embedded inside the power button on the side of the device.
Experts say that Samsung Electronics has decided to stick with the existing technology as it is more advantageous in terms of user experience. It negates the need to open the foldable phone and unlock the phone using the fingerprint. Structural characteristics of the technology are not the reason for its non-inclusion.
Whether that changes down the line is anybody's guess right now. It's still too early to speculate on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. Things could change before the devices hit the market later this year.
