OnePlus’ first foldable phone is both good and bad news for Samsung

While Samsung launched its fifth-generation foldable phones last week, some rival firms are launching their first-generation ones. OnePlus is one such company, and it is expected to launch its first foldable phone later this month. It is called the OnePlus Open, which is both good and bad news for Samsung.

OnePlus Open uses Samsung Display's foldable OLED screen

OnePlus phones are generally sold in more Western countries than phones from other Chinese firms. So, the OnePlus Open is expected to be available in more European and North American countries to compete with the Galaxy Z Fold 5. That means more competition for Samsung. The OnePlus Open is said to feature more impressive camera hardware, bigger screens, and a much bigger battery. Due to its better hardware specifications, the foldable phone from OnePlus might steal some buyers from Samsung. However, the OnePlus Open also brings revenue to Samsung Electronics.

OnePlus Open

According to a report from tipster Max Jambor, the OnePlus Open was supposed to feature a BOE display. However, the company has now decided to use a superior foldable OLED panel from Samsung Display. It is rumored to feature a 6.3-inch cover display with Full HD+ resolution and a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display with QHD+ resolution. Foldable OLED screens from Samsung Display are generally considered better than the ones from BOE. So, while OnePlus' first foldable phone will compete with Samsung's mobile phone division, it will bring in revenue for Samsung's display manufacturing business.

Going by previous reports, the OnePlus Open is expected to feature the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor used in the Galaxy Z Fold 5, along with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. It could also have a 32MP selfie camera on the cover screen, a 20MP selfie camera on the foldable screen, a 50MP primary rear camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. It is expected to be powered by a 4,800mAh battery with 67W fast charging. This phone is expected to be priced in the $1,500 to $1,800 range.

In the meantime, you can watch our hands-on video of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 that will compete with the OnePlus Open.
