Samsung can ill-afford disruption to its business due to a leadership gap.

When people search for who is the CEO of Samsung, they're surprised to find out that the Korean giant has a co-CEO system. This system has been in place since 2018, where two top executives are appointed joint CEOs to manage one of the conglomerate's most valuable companies. Young Hyun Jun and Jong-hee Han were most recently appointed to the position.
Unfortunately, it was confirmed yesterday that Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and co-CEO Jong-hee Han has passed away. Samsung later filed regulatory paperwork to announce that Jun Young hyun will act as the sole CEO. Han's passing has led many to advise an overhaul for Samsug's co-CEO system.
The joint CEO concept isn't what you'd normally see in major tech companies, where executive authority rests in one clear leader. Pick any one, Apple, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Meta, Qualcomm, etc. They have one person in the top job who are then supported by a number of top executives.
Industry watchers feel that the sudden absence of one of the co-CEOs is likely going to result in short-term leadership challenges for the company. Samsung Electronics would have to appoint a successor in the near future to ensure that no disruption comes of this.
The late Han was overseeing Samsung's Device eXperience division which encompasses the entire electronics and consumer devices business, including smartphones, TVs, and home appliances. It's a key business area for Samsung and it can ill-afford issues due to a lack of leadership in this segment.
Samsung likely has contingency plans in place to ensure a smooth transfer of leadership, but perhaps this would give it cause to overhaul the entire co-CEO system.
