A few hours ago, Samsung revealed the date for the next Galaxy Unpacked event, where it will launch the Galaxy S25 series. So far, there have been many leaks about the three devices in the lineup, giving us a good idea about them. One of the leaks claims that the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra will feature Qi2 wireless charging standard. Well, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which developed Qi2, has just hinted that Samsung’s upcoming flagship phones will feature the standard.
Samsung's statement to WPC hints Galaxy S25 will feature Qi2
WPC has issued a new press release about the expansion of the Qi2 wireless charging standard. In the press release, the firm has mentioned a statement from Samsung which reads “The exceptional Qi2 growth story will continue in 2025. You can expect to see Android devices supporting Qi2 from Samsung Galaxy devices in 2025.”
While the South Korean tech giant hasn’t mentioned which will be the first Galaxy device featuring Qi2, we assume that it is hinting towards the Galaxy S25 series because the company has given the statement right on the heels of the announcement about the date of the next Galaxy Unpacked event, where it will launch the new lineup.
What benefits will Qi2 offer on Galaxy phones?
Samsung’s current flagship Galaxy phones and tablets, including the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 series, feature Qi charging, which supports up to 15W charging speed. The new Qi2 charging standard not only offers faster, 25W charging but also has magnets that allow you to attach any compatible accessory to a device.
The story continues after the video…
If Qi2 sounds similar to Apple’s MagSafe that is because it is based on MagSafe. We’ll have to see how Samsung implements Qi2 in the Galaxy S25. That is if it only offers Qi2’s faster charging speed or also support for magnets. Leaks suggest that the former will be the case. That means you will have to buy a Magnetic case to attach accessories to it.
Google is contributing to the Qi 2.2 standard
The press release also has a statement from Google. It reads “Google is committed to the Qi2 wireless charging standard and increasing the penetration of Qi2 into Android handsets and other devices. Google is helping to achieve this goal by playing a leading role in the development of the upcoming Qi v2.2 standard, which includes Google's contribution of its own high-power wireless charging technology to WPC.”
Google’s statement suggests that it is contributing in the Qi 2.2 standard to offer higher charging wattage.
