Samsung, the world's biggest memory chip maker, has unveiled the world's fastest semiconductor storage device for automobiles. It is the first automobile SSD in the world to use the PCIe 4.0 interface and 8th-generation V-NAND, offering high data transfer speeds and improved reliability.

Samsung AM9C1 is the world's first PCIe 4.0 storage chip for automobiles

The Auto SSD AM9C1 is Samsung's storage device that uses its eight-generation vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology, triple-level cell (TLC) design, and the PCIe 4.0 standard. The 256GB version of the chip offers sequential read speeds of up to 4,400Mbps and sequential write speeds of up to 400Mbps in its single-level cell (SLC) mode. That is a 50% improvement in speed compared to its predecessor, the AM991.

This SSD uses a 5nm Samsung controller. It offers even faster storage and a single-level cell (SLC) mode, with sequential read speeds reaching up to 4,700Mbps and sequential write speeds reaching up to 1,400Mbps. The SSD will be available in various sizes ranging from 128GB to 2TB. It is also compliant with the AEC-Q1003 Grade 2 standard, which means it can operate in extremely cold and hot environments, ranging from -40ºC to 105ºC.

Samsung is currently sampling its new SSD to its partners. Mass production is expected to start by the end of this year. The mass production of 2TB version of the AM9C1 will start early next year.

Hyunduk Cho, Vice President and Head of the Automotive Group at Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business, said, “We are collaborating with global autonomous vehicle makers and providing high-performance, high-capacity automotive products. Samsung will continue to lead the Physical AI1 memory market that encompasses applications from autonomous driving to robotics technologies.
