Three years ago, Samsung joined hands with AMD to bring RDNA2 graphics to its Exynos processors. The first processor with the AMD RDNA2-based GPU technologies was the Exynos 2200, featuring the Xclipse 920 GPU. However, the chip didn't bring anything groundbreaking in terms of graphics performance. It was supposed to be a long-term collaboration, but it might be coming to an end.
According to a rumor, Samsung's System LSI team might be looking to end its partnership with AMD for mobile GPUs. System LSI is the arm of Samsung Electronics that makes Exynos processors, ISOCELL camera sensors, and other chips. If the rumor is to be believed, System LSI is looking to develop in-house GPUs rather than depending on other brands. The company reportedly has plans to develop in-house technologies in the AI, automotive, and graphics segments and become independent by 2025.
If this information is correct, we might see Samsung's in-house GPU inside the Exynos chip that's meant to be designed for the Galaxy S25. However, nothing is set in stone until an official announcement happens or a flagship Exynos chip is launched without an AMD RDNA-based GPU.
Currently, the Exynos 2400 chip is expected to launch early next year with an AMD-based GPU. This chip will be used in the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+, and it is set to bring 2x more graphics prowess compared to the Exynos 2200 used in the Galaxy S22 series. Next-generation mid-range Exynos chips—Exynos 1430 and Exynos 1480—are also expected to feature an AMD GPU.
