Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm have been co-developing the next-gen XR (Extended Reality) headset, codenamed Project Moohan, for the past few years. However, new evidence suggests that, in parallel with Project Moohan, Samsung is developing at least two other XR devices that could take the form of smart XR glasses.

One pair of glasses, codenamed Haean, recently made the news in Korea (via ETNews). There are also hints that Samsung might be working on yet another device other XR device called Jinju. What do these codenames mean?

  • Haean: In Korean, the word “haean” translates to coast. It can also mean seaside or seaboard.
  • Jinju: In Korean, the word “jinju” means pearl.

As a reminder, Moohan — which is the codename given to the only Samsung XR project that's been officially confirmed so far — is a name derived from the Korean word for “infinite.”

Project Moohan, a.k.a. Galaxy XR, is a head-mounted device meant for indoor use. Haean reportedly takes the form of a pair of smart glasses that are thin enough to be used outdoors and on the move. Likewise, the mysterious Project Jinju may have a form factor closer to smart glasses than a headset.

Samsung is reportedly putting a lot of effort into creating a control interface for Project Haean based on cameras that could recognize hand gestures. The smart XR glasses would transmit sound through the frame.

However, certain characteristics don't seem set in stone just yet. Reportedly, Samsung hasn't finalized the design and specifications for its smart XR glasses, which puts into question their availability.

On the one hand, Samsung's XR glasses still seem to be in a relatively early stage of development. On the other hand, the recent report from Korea states that Samsung is likely to officially launch its XR headset and smart glasses side-by-side later this year.

Project Moohan/Galaxy XR is said to feature two 1.3-inch OLEDoS 4K panels manufactured by Sony. The headset is supposedly powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, which could be accompanied by 16GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. It's logical to assume that Samsung's smart glasses won't be nearly as powerful as Project Moohan/Galaxy XR.

Official prices for Project Moohan are unknown, but predictions hint at a $2,500 price tag for the USA. Presumably, Samsung's Haean and Jinju XR glasses would be priced lower.
