Samsung has been making various eco-friendly and sustainability efforts over the past few years. The company made several changes to its material procurement, production mechanism, and packaging of its products. At CES 2022, the company announced its sustainability efforts with 2022 home appliances.

Reducing microplastics from entering the environment

The South Korean firm has partnered with American clothing firm Patagonia to study microplastics and reduce their release from washing machines. The companies have also collaborated with NGO Ocean Wise that helps various businesses cut down the use of unnecessary plastics in their entire business chain.

Microplastics Oceans

Samsung's new Bespoke Water Purifier is the first in the industry that can remove microplastics as little as 0.5 to 1 micrometer from drinking water. It has also received a certification from NSF International for its ability to remove microplastics.

Creating energy self-sufficient homes, reducing energy consumption

Samsung SmartThings Energy

The South Korean firm has also partnered with Q Cells to implement the Zero Energy Home Integration feature for SmartThings Energy. This feature helps users establish energy self-sufficiency through solar panels and solutions to save generated power. SmartThings Energy also monitors the energy consumption of compatible home appliances and recommends how users can reduce them.

Samsung has also collaborated with Uswitch in the UK and Wattbuy in the US to help users switch over to the most cost-efficient energy provider in their region.

Increasing use of recycled plastic in products and packaging

The tech giant has also ramped up the use of recycled plastic in its products and packaging. Samsung has raised the goal for recycled plastic usage in products from 5% in 2021 to 30% by 2024. This will result in the use of recycled plastic from 25,000 tons in 2021 to 158,000 tons in 2024.

The company even developed a new type of polypropylene recycled plastic from used lunchboxes and facial mask straps, and that's being used to make tubs for its washing machines. This unique material is reportedly more resistant to external shocks.

Samsung is also expanding eco-friendly packaging to more products, including air purifiers, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, and more. This packaging can be repurposed into decorative things that people can use in their homes.

Hyesoon Yang, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “At CES 2022, we outlined how Samsung will contribute in tackling some of the world's most pressing environmental and sustainability issues. Collaborations to combat microplastic pollution; helping consumers reduce their energy consumption; cutting back on waste by using recycled plastic; and adapting eco-conscious packaging, these are some of the activities we are working on to develop various tangible solutions for environmental problems and a sustainable future.”
