Recently, we learned that Samsung Foundry's fab utilization had climbed to around 70%–80%, with the company aiming to reach full utilization by the end of this year. Now, it looks like the firm's chip-making business is making steady progress toward that goal.
According to a new report from ZDNet Korea, Samsung Foundry's 4nm production capacity is fully booked through next year. Reportedly, the node is being heavily utilized for manufacturing Samsung's own HBM4 chips as well as Nvidia's Groq3 LPX accelerators.
With its 4nm lines running at full capacity, Samsung is positioning its 5nm process as an alternative. The node is more cost-effective while still being suitable for high-performance applications. Reportedly, overseas fabless companies have been placing a growing number of orders for this 5nm process over the past three to four months.
Geopolitical factors are also helping Samsung Foundry attract more customers. With TSMC prioritizing its largest clients and its advanced-node capacity remaining heavily booked, some companies that are unable to secure production slots there are turning to Samsung instead, further benefitting the South Korean tech giant.
The report also claims that Samsung is receiving inquiries for its 2nm process. According to industry experts, the company's biggest challenge now is improving manufacturing yields to convert that interest into orders.
