Samsung was the leading Android OEM in terms of software updates for the past couple of years. Then, Google came up with a bang. It announced an unprecedented 7-year Android OS update policy, and Samsung matched it with the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year. It means the devices will stay updated up to 2031!
When asked about its decision to increase software support, here's what Samsung had to say.
Samsung says people are keeping their phones for longer these days
The folks over at GSMArena asked Samsung why it decided to offer seven Android OS updates to its new phones. Samsung VP Nicholas Porter said that the company's analysis found that extending software support adds more value to a smartphone. Moreover, the company found that people tend to keep their phones for a longer period these days.
The South Korean firm also found that even if some people don't care about the added support, they will still benefit from improved security and longer fluidity of their phones over the years. They will get a better user experience even after a few years.
Which Galaxy devices will get 7 Android OS updates?
Samsung has promised Android OS updates and security updates for seven years for the Galaxy S24 series, and the same is likely to be offered to upcoming Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series phones. Even the Tab Active 5 Enterprise Edition will get seven years of Android OS updates.
Starting last year, Samsung started offering Android OS updates for four years and security updates for five years for its affordable and mid-range phones.
