Samsung's smartwatches aren't among the top devices in terms of health-tracking accuracy. The company has been trying to improve the health tracking of Galaxy Watches through several joint research and development programs. One of those initiatives is Samsung Health Research Stack, which aims to improve data-based digital health research.

Samsung Health Research Stack is an open-source project for data-based digital health research using Android smartphones and Wear OS smartwatches. It offers a complete software environment to easily and safely plan services using relevant data. It offers an SDK for easier app creation, a back-end service for managing health data, and a website to help with app design and data analysis.

It supports the development of mobile and wearable apps. Samsung has improved Sensor SDK for apps that utilize ECG on Galaxy Watches and other Wear OS devices. Moreover, the Data SDK now offers sleep data analysis.

The South Korean firm claims it took feedback from researchers and app developers to improve the back-end service and the website. The back-end service now includes data from large clinical trials, while the website now helps with data management, patient recruitment, progress management, and surveys.

Samsung launched Samsung Health Stack Alpha in 2022, and Samsung Health Stack 1.0 in 2023, and that program has now been renamed to Samsung Health Research Stack. It is available for all companies and medical institutions.

Samsung Health Research Stack will be showcased at Samsung's keynote event at the Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24), which will be held on October 3 in San Jose, California, USA.

Yunsu Lee, Head of the Data Intelligence Team, Samsung Research, said, “Samsung Health Research Stack is already being used in multiple domestic and international clinical studies that utilize Galaxy Watch. With our innovative wearable technology, we aim to contribute to expanding the digital health ecosystem and serve as a valuable partner to IT and medical professionals in achieving research breakthroughs.
