Samsung and Hyundai test end-to-end RedCap technology over a private 5G network
The end-to-end RedCap private 5G network trial conducted by Samsung Networks and Hyundai Motor Group highlights the next-generation 5G networks meant for industries. It will be showcased at MWC 2025 next month. Hyundai Motor Group owns the Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia brands.
The two companies have been working to transform Hyundai's Ulsan Plant into a smart factory. It is the world’s largest automobile plant, producing an average of 6,000 vehicles daily. A high-performance and low-latency network is vital for any smart plant or factory.
The advanced 5G network can help Hyundai improve the plant's efficiency by allowing it to connect and manage numerous devices and manufacturing systems across the plant. It will also allow real-time data download and upload.
A RedCap private 5G network can help with a secure connection to several Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), IoT devices, robots, sensors, and tablet PCs. AGVs are robotic vehicles that deliver parts to designated production lines. It offers low-complexity connectivity, reducing latency and improving power efficiency and battery life.
Last month, the companies tested the private 5G network with RedCap at Samsung's private testbed, which is located at its R&D center. The company used Samsung Network's baseband units, an integrated Network Management System, radios (4.7 GHz band support), and virtualized 5G Core.
The test integrated Hyundai's Diagnostic Scan (D Scan) tool, which uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF system, into Samsung’s private 5G network. Hyundai uses the D Scan device to inspect and determine whether vehicles are assembled perfectly. Compared to previous communication over Wi-Fi, Hyundai noticed more real-time and seamless data transmission when using the private 5G network.
Hyundai plans to deploy this RedCap private 5G network at its newest electric vehicle manufacturing plant, which will begin full-fledged operations in the first half of 2026.
Jae Min Lee, Vice President and Head of the E-FOREST Center of Hyundai Motor and Kia, said, “Hyundai Motor was the first Korean company to implement P-5G in mass production. We are also the industry’s first to verify P-5G RedCap technology, reinforcing our global leadership in smart manufacturing solutions. We will continue to accelerate its commercialization.”
