Samsung's System LSI division is the second biggest mobile camera sensor maker in the world, and its camera sensors are used in several smartphones, including Samsung's own Galaxy devices. Although it is looking to expand its market share to compete with Sony, the company is reportedly going to increase the prices of its ISOCELL camera sensors.
Samsung could increase prices of 32MP or higher resoltion camera sensors by 25% or higher
According to a new report, the prices of Samsung's CIS (Camera Image Sensors) will increase by 25% on an average from next year. Some camera sensors could see price hikes of 30% or more, and this could be related to increased prices of camera components. The demand for smartphones was sluggish over the past two years, just after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the demand for smartphones is expected to increase next year, and that will also lead to increase in camera sensor sales. An increase in the prices of camera sensors could lead to higher profits for Samsung.
Apparently, the price hike will mostly affect high-resolution ISOCELL camera sensors. These include models with resolution of 32MP or higher. Since most smartphones are using high-resolution sensors for their primary and telephoto cameras, Samsung may feel confident that an increase in the prices of its sensors will not affect its sales.
Many Chinese smartphone brands are using Samsung's 200MP sensors for their primary cameras in mid-range devices, 32MP or 50MP sensors for telephoto cameras, and 50MP or 64MP sensors for ultrawide cameras. Vivo will reportedly use Samsung's 200MP camera sensor for the Vivo X100 Pro+'s telephoto camera.
