It's been less than a month since the 990 EVO SSD went official, and Samsung has just launched the first discount on the new EVO. It's not a lot if you buy the 1TB model, but you can save a pretty penny on the 2TB version.
If you buy the 1TB 990 EVO SSD right now, you can save $15 and spend $109 instead of $124. However, you can get more value from the 2TB 990 EVO SSD and save $40. You can now buy it for $169 instead of $209.
These discounts also work if you want to buy the SSDs through a 12-month payment plan with Samsung Financing, where available.
Right below the speed limit for console expansion
The 990 EVO SSD is a great budget-oriented NVME PCIe 4.0 / 5.0 solution for PCs and laptops, but you probably shouldn't consider it if you're looking to expand the memory of your gaming console.
Technically speaking, Sony says the PlayStation 5 needs SSD expansions that can achieve read speeds of at least 5,500MB/s, and the 990 EVO falls just short of that. It tops read/write speeds of 5,000 and 4,200MB/s. Plus, it doesn't have a heatsink, and Sony recommends using one for your PlayStation's memory expansion.
That being said, the 990 EVO SSD is still a great solution for PCs and laptops — one that doesn't break the bank. It's power efficient, has smart thermal control, and can use Samsung's fantastic Magician Software for firmware updates, health checks, and data migration.
