Every market watcher agrees that Samsung was the most successful global smartphone vendor in the first quarter of 2022. A more recent report from BanklessTimes supports this and suggests that Samsung shipped nearly 74 million smartphones in Q1.
These new estimates based on data from IDC closely match the market analysis of Canalys and Counterpoint. According to this new report extrapolated from IDC numbers, Samsung shipped 73.6 million smartphones and led the market in front of Apple with a 23.4% market share.
Apple had a more stable position in the smartphone market in Q1
Apple, which is Samsung's fiercest rival in the mobile industry, reportedly shipped 56 million smartphones globally, allowing it to capture 18% of the global market.
It's worth noting that the gap between Samsung and Apple was narrower in Q1 2022, as Apple was the only OEM in the smartphone sector to have experienced positive growth during the three-month period starting January.
In the first quarter of 2022, Samsung and Apple were followed by a few Chinese OEMs, including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo. Xiaomi (3rd place) captured 12.7% of the market in Q1 2022 and was followed by Oppo in 4th place with an 8.7% market share. Vivo (5th place) held 8.1% of the global smartphone market.
