Samsung, one of the world's biggest cellular network infrastructure providers, has announced that it has been chosen as an official member of the O-RAN open-source project's TOC (Technical Oversight Committee). The South Korean firm's office term begins this month and ends towards the end of 2023.
The company has already been contributing to the O-RAN Alliance, but being an official member helps it take important decisions for the future development of the ecosystem. Samsung has been developing open-source code for RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) over the past two years. JinGuk Jeong, Vice President and Head of Advanced Solutions Team at Samsung Research's Advanced Communications Research Center, is Samsung's official representative to the TOC.
The O-RAN SC TOC has twelve official members, including other technology giants like AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Orange, Nokia, NTT Docomo, Radisys, Samsung Electronics, TIM, Viavi, and Windriver.
O-RAN has been a matter of great interest for the telecommunication industry and various other electronics brands. It has the potential to become the next big RAN network for better, faster, and more flexible cellular networks. Samsung has already been offering 5G vRAN systems to network carriers, but O-RAN will add more flexibility to the system.
