Samsung partners with GM to develop batteries for next-gen EVs

Samsung’s battery manufacturing division, Samsung SDI, has announced that it has partnered with General Motors (GM) to jointly develop prismatic batteries for GM’s next-generation electric vehicle (EV) models. The South Korean tech giant says that these batteries will feature high energy density and fast charging.

Samsung is also acquiring GM’s 49.99% share in its partnership with Synergy Cells, which the two companies had established in 2024 to build a battery plant in New Carlisle, Indiana. The South Korean tech giant says that with the acquisition, it now has the first independently operated battery production base in North America.

Samsung says that the battery plant is under construction. Once completed, it will utilize the plant to produce high-tech batteries for use in various applications, including energy storage systems (ESS). The demand for ESS has been skyrocketing lately as it is one of the things required for artificial intelligence (AI) server farms.

Commenting on the matter, Samsung said, “While reflecting recent market changes, this acquisition decision is to continue the strategic partnership with GM. We will continue our commitment to an electrified future with the partner, while utilizing the plant to proactively respond to the fast-growing ESS market in the U.S.
