During Samsung’s CES 2023 press conference, the company announced a new feature called Relumino Mode for its new smart TVs. The feature will be available on some new Smart TVs launched in 2023. The Relumino Mode helps people with vision impairment to see the content more clearly. The South Korean firm also released a video explaining how Relumino Mode works and helps people with vision impairments.
According to Samsung, Relumino Mode outlines objects, enhances contrast, adjusts brightness, improves colors, and sharpens the content, all of which make the content look much clearer to a person with vision impairment. The company also compared it to how the video would look without the feature enabled. Relumino Mode will be offered with the QN90C, QN80C, QN900C, and QN800C, all of which are Samsung’s new TVs for 2023.
Relumino Mode, isn’t new, though. Samsung announced this feature in 2017. Back then, Relumino was an app that you could install on a Samsung smartphone. You then had to connect the phone to a Samsung Gear VR device. After which, the app would record what’s in front of the person wearing the VR using the phone’s camera, enhance the image in a way that it looks clear to someone with vision impairment, and then show it to that person.
The technique allowed people with vision issues to see what was in front of them more clearly than they would be able to see with the naked eye. Now, Samsung has made Relumino available for its TVs natively. Smart TVs nowadays are very powerful and using that power for technologies such as Relumino Mode is the best way to utilize it. Samsung is indeed setting a high bar for other brands in offering accessibility features on TVs.
