There haven't been a lot of rumors about the Galaxy Z Flip 2 recently. It was expected that perhaps the company might unveil it at its next Unpacked event. The handset would have been revealed alongside the Galaxy S21 series.
That may not be the case, though. New reports suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 2 has been removed from the agenda for Samsung's next Unpacked. In that case, the Galaxy S21 lineup will not have to share the limelight with its foldable cousin.
Galaxy Z Flip 2 may arrive later than its predecessor
Samsung did announce the Galaxy Z Flip at the same Unpacked event in San Francisco as the Galaxy S20 in February this year. The foldable was even released before the Galaxy S20 lineup. Samsung may not do that this year to prevent the two devices from competing against each other.
Korean media is reporting that the Galaxy Z Flip 2 won't be unveiled in the first quarter of 2021. If their prediction is accurate, then we may not get to see the new foldable until March at the very least. This would allow Samsung to capitalize on the initial hype for the Galaxy S21 series without any competition from the foldable.
Perhaps this might be one of the reasons why the Galaxy S21 announcement is taking place in early January, as we've already confirmed. Samsung might want to put some distance between all of the high-end phones it's due to release next year. Getting done with the Galaxy S21 launch first will limit the possibility of the Galaxy Z Flip 2 taking away some sales from the top-of-the-line Ultra model.
The later launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 2 is probably the reason why we haven't seen a lot of rumors about the device so far. On the other hand, there have already been quite a few major leaks about the Galaxy S21.
Samsung is yet to confirm its plans for the 2021 flagship launches. Fortunately, January is not that far off so we won't have to wait for too long.
