If it feels like everything is more expensive these days, then you may not feel surprised when you buy Samsung's next clamshell foldable smartphone. The expectation was that perhaps the company might further reduce the prices but that may not happen.
However, if a new leak is to be believed, there's a chance that the new foldable will be more expensive. The price increase would be marginal at best, but it could take away a major psychological advantage that contributed to the Galaxy Z Flip 3's success.
Galaxy Z Flip 4 might be more expensive than its predecessor
A leakster claims that prices for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in Europe will start at 1080 euro for the 128GB storage variant. The 256GB variant will cost 1,160 euro whereas the new 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 4 will cost 1,280 euro.
Despite being marginal, it's an increase nonetheless. The 128GB Galaxy Z Flip 3 starts at 1,049 euro. This means that it successor will be more expensive by 31 euro. The price comparison for the 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 4 variant can't be made since the Galaxy Z Flip 3 wasn't offered with that much internal storage.
It's unclear whether this slight price increase applies to Europe only or if Samsung will make the new foldable more expensive elsewhere. It would be interesting to see if the Galaxy Z Flip 4 loses the magical $999 number in the United States.
Reduced prices played a major role in allowing Samsung to sell more than 10 million Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 units since August last year. Many would have expected Samsung to continue reducing prices to increase sales. Perhaps not this time around.
It's pertinent to note that these are not the only upcoming Samsung devices expected to cost more than the models they're replacing. An earlier leak revealed that the Galaxy Watch 5 prices will be higher than the Galaxy Watch 4 as well. That's just the world we live in now.
