Samsung introduced Galaxy AI earlier this year with the Galaxy S24. Some of the most critical Galaxy AI features, such as Chat Assist, Interpreter Mode, and Live Translate Call, depend heavily on natural language processing, so the algorithms need to be powerful. Today, Samsung revealed how it works with European research teams to improve language processing algorithms.

Samsung Research Poland plays a significant role in improving European language support in Galaxy AI

Samsung R&D Institute Poland (SRPOL) plays a huge role in automatic speech recognition, neural machine translation, and text-to-speech models. It has worked on over 30 languages and collaborates with Samsung Research teams across four different time zones. It played a huge part in bringing support for 10 European languages to Galaxy AI.

SRPOL has a passionate team that is hungry to learn more. It also has several tools, including a crowdsourcing platform, that enables it to be fast and flexible. The team enjoys annotation, data collection, and research, making it suitable for working on different languages for natural processing.

Despite its deep experience and expertise, Adam Ros, Head of Artificial Intelligence at SRPOL, explained that there can be hurdles related to subtle nuances and variations in each language. There can also be some untranslatable phrases and expressions that may not have direct equivalents in other languages. Some languages, such as Spanish, are spoken faster than others.

You can see how Galaxy AI works during real-time language translation in our video below.

SRPOL has been transformed into a European center for AI language development. It shortens the path between various teams across different regions. It helped the Jordan team’s efforts to teach the Arabic language's dialects and variants to Galaxy AI. It also helped the Brazil team’s work on Latin American languages. The team is working hard towards Samsung's vision for Galaxy AI, which aims to reduce cultural and language barriers.

Kornel Jankowski, Head of Speech Decoding at SRPOL, said, “Collaboration across the continent means relentless data collection, annotation, and research, which has become something we really enjoy. We’ve dealt with so many languages that our team developed universal, language-agnostic skills. When we’re asked to support a new language, everybody’s attitude is: Oh wow, we get to learn another one, that’s going to be fun!

In the future, Samsung may announce support for more languages for Galaxy AI and its myriad of features.
