Samsung Electronics sources OLED displays for its smartphones from Samsung Display. However, not entirely. The amount of OLED panels that the latter can supply to the former, after supplying those to other brands, such as Apple, aren’t usually enough. In such cases, Samsung Electronics have to knock on other brands’ doors for OLED panels. This year too, that’s the case.

According to a new report from The Elec, Samsung Electronics estimates that it will require 163.2 million units of OLED panels for its smartphone this year. Samsung Display, unfortunately, can supply only 159 million units, which is 97% of the the former’s requirements. As such, Samsung Electronics will have to source the remaining number of OLED panels from other companies.

The story continues after the video…

Among the remaining 4.2 million units, Samsung Electronics is going to source 1 million OLED panels from Tianma. At the moment, there’s no information from which company the South Korean tech giant plans to source the remaining 3.2 million units. However, the publication says that BOE won’t be the one, mainly due to the ongoing patent issues between the two companies.

The report from South Korea says that Samsung Electronics will use the OLED panels that it will source from Tianma in the company’s affordable smartphones, such as the entry-level Galaxy M and Galaxy F series devices. It indicates that the panels from the Chinese firm won’t be as good, especially in terms of performance, as the ones manufactured by Samsung Display.

Will Samsung’s latest attempt at a cultural shift be another failure?

Samsung has been facing strong headwinds for a few years now. First, it was the supply glut in the memory market, which significantly reduced profits.
