Samsung trademarks ‘Moderate Bass’ for TVs and soundbars

We discovered a new trademark application Samsung filed with the UK Intellectual Property Office last week. The trademark concerns something Samsung calls “Moderate Bass.” In a broad sense, this new trademark applies to TVs, soundbars, speakers, and downloadable software for controlling TVs.

Whatever it is, it seems like an audio technology or a setting that might allow TV or soundbar users to set a, well, moderate bass level.

It's unclear if this alleged audio technology is meant to lower the bass level on equipment like subwoofers or increase the bass level to a moderate level on equipment with poorer speakers in the low end. The trademark application doesn't reveal much else.

Modern Samsung TVs have decent built-in speakers, particularly in the mid-to-high-end segment. Samsung soundbars have also become a lot cleverer and offer great audio with support for technologies such as Dolby ATMOS.

When combined, using Samsung's proprietary Q-Symphony technology, TV speakers and soundbars can deliver a great cinematic audio experience.

Maybe “Moderate Bass” is meant to improve all that, but there's no way to tell. Besides, not all trademark applications turn into something meaningful, so, we will have to wait and see if something palpable comes out of this one.

We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you are interested in getting a Samsung TV or learning more about what makes them tick, we recommend checking out our YouTube channel, where we recently posted a handful of videos on various models.
