Samsung trademarks more names related to smart rings and wearables

Last week, Samsung applied to trademark the “Samsung Circle,” “Samsung Index,” and “Samsung Insight” names with the UK Intellectual Property Office. The plot thickened since. Not only has Samsung reapplied to trademark similar monikers in South Korea, but three new monikers surfaced: Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm.

Although this isn't the first time a Samsung trademark application hints at a new type of wearable device being in the works, we can't recall a time when Samsung applied for so many subsequent trademarks that all seemingly correspond to smart wearables and/or accessories.

First, Samsung wasn't satisfied with the original trademarks listed in the UK last week and had to attach the “Galaxy” name to them. Hence the Galaxy Index, Galaxy Insight, and Galaxy Circle monikers came into existence a few days later. Second, Samsung has now secured three new trademarks that are just as puzzling as the first.

Enter the Galaxy One, Pulse, and Rhythm

The new Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm trademarks were discovered at KIPRIS by GalaxyClub. And interestingly enough, while the Galaxy Circle, Galaxy Index, and Galaxy Insight shared the “smart rings, smartwatches, smartphones, and wearable computers” designations, the trademark applications for the Galaxy One, Pulse, and Rhythm classify them as “wearables, such as smart rings, bracelets, necklaces, and glasses.”

In addition, the documentation attached these three new monikers delve into the software side and associate the One, Pulse, and Rhythm with “software application for smart rings for tracking, gathering, monitoring, detecting, recognizing, malfunctioning, transmitting, managing and assessing biometric and physiological data, vital signs and personal health records, and for providing medical advice.”

Although these trademark applications can't guarantee a thing, given all this information, we could take a wild guess and speculate that the Galaxy Circle, Index, and Insight are three possible names for an upcoming Samsung smart ring. Whereas Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm could be three other names or one-to-three new apps that enable fitness and health tracking on the device.

At this point, only Samsung knows. But whatever the case may be, the Korean tech giant sure seems to be cooking up a new type of smart device. Even its latest Health beta update has a reference to support added for smart rings. If such a device exists in Samsung's development labs, we may not see it on stage at Unpacked later this month, but we hopefully will hear more about it soon.
