Samsung won’t add Dolby Vision to its TVs but your car is fine

You won't find support for Dolby Vision on any of the best Samsung TVs you can buy right now. It prefers the HDR10+ format on TVs, most likely since the format was co-created by Samsung. So even though most high-end TVs now have Dolby Vision support, Samsung continues to go against the grain.

It doesn't seem to oppose bringing Dolby Vision support to your car, though. Samsung Display has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dolby to bring this high dynamic range image technology to automotive OLED panels.

Samsung Display will bring Dolby Vision to your car

Samsung Display signed this memorandum earlier today with Dolby Laboratories. The two companies will jointly promote Dolby Vision technology with respect to its use for automotive OLED display panels.

Samsung's display affiliate is one of the leading suppliers of OLED panels for auto manufacturers. The company has been crushing it in this market. Samsung Display shipped its highest number of automotive OLED panels in Q3 2024, sending out over 540,000 units. This is incredible growth when you consider that it only shipped 100,000 units in Q1 2023.

This memorandum aims to simplify the evaluation and certification process for car manufacturers that want to use Samsung's automotive OLEDs with Dolby Vision. The company is going to show off its next-gen automotive OLED panels alongside Dolby at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025 in Las Vegas next month.

Given that Samsung Display supplies the panels for many of Samsung's high-end TVs, would this closer relationship between the two companies eventually lead to a scenario where Samsung finally brings Dolby Vision support to its TVs? I wouldn't bet money on that just yet.
