Samsung has unveiled its first UFS 5.0 storage chip, which it claims is also the world’s fastest. Designed for smartphones and tablets, the new storage solution offers a significant performance boost over the UFS 4.x storage chips used in current devices such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra. It could debut in the Galaxy S27 series in early 2027.
The new storage chip is based on the latest embedded storage interface standard from Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC). Samsung claims its UFS 5.0 chip delivers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s.
Those figures are more than twice as fast as UFS 4.1 storage and represent the highest UFS 5.0 speeds announced in the world so far. The chip measures just 7.5 × 13 × 0.9mm, making it 16.7% smaller than Samsung’s UFS 4.1 solution.

The speed improvements could lead to faster app launches, quicker file transfers, and better overall device responsiveness. They could also help accelerate the processing of large datasets used by on-device AI applications.
Samsung says its UFS 5.0 chip is 40% more power-efficient than its UFS 4.1 storage. In theory, that should translate into longer battery life. The company used various technologies such as clock gating and multi-voltage operation to bring those efficiency improvements.
Samsung plans to start mass production of its UFS 5.0 chips in the fourth quarter of 2026. The storage solution will be available in capacities of up to 1TB. In addition to smartphones and tablets, it can also be used in laptops, smartwatches, and extended reality (XR) devices.
