Samsung was the first major smartphone brand to launch a foldable phone globally. It launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019 and made consistent improvements each year. Now that it is time to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6, the company has recounted the improvements it brought to the Galaxy Z Fold series.
Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be thinner and lighter than Galaxy Z Fold 5
In a new blog post, Samsung showcased all the improvements it brought with each new Galaxy Z Fold iteration and said it will continue to make similar improvements. The company hints that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is said to be 6.1mm thin and weighs 239g.
The original Galaxy Fold was launched in 2019, and it weighed 276g and was 17.1mm thick.
The next year, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was launched. It was heavier than the original Galaxy Fold but significantly improved the hinge and the overall design. It was 16.8mm thick and had a thinner and less visible hinge. The hinge also allowed the phone to stay open at various angles, improving the phone's utility, especially while capturing images and videos. It also featured a brush mechanism to prevent dust from entering the hinge.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 came in 2021 with a thinner and lighter body. It was 16mm thin when closed and 6.4mm thin when open. It weighed 271g, an improvement over the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It was also the first foldable smartphone in the world with an IPX8 rating for water resistance.
In 2022, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with an even lighter body at 263g. It was 6.3mm thin when open and 15.8mm thin when closed. Its hinge was 21% lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 3 one. Its hinge used a linear mechanism instead of a rotary, making the hinge mechanism simpler.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5, which was launched in 2023, was even lighter. It was 13.4mm thin (when closed) and weighed 253g. It used a new hinge design called Flex Hinge, which bent the screen like a water droplet using four drive shafts. This improved the screen durability, made the screen crease less visible, and removed the gap between the two halves of the phone.
