Samsung is reportedly working on a new chip that could significantly improve the AI capabilities of your PC. The chip, called GAIA, is described as an AI accelerator for PCs.

It's claimed that Samsung has already supplied prototypes of the chip to leading PC manufacturers like HP and Lenovo for performance validation.

Chip could be a great fit for mid-range PCs in emerging markets

GAIA will reportedly be manufactured on Samsung's 4nm process. It will be a memory-centric AI accelerator that speeds up AI computation. The chip has been designed with an optimized neural processing unit or NPU for more efficient handling of on-device AI tasks.

The idea is not too different from the NPUs that we already see on Samsung's Exynos mobile chipsets. GAIA will essentially be a PC-specific implementation of the NPU chip that does the heavy lifting to speed up on-device AI while enhancing inference and training capabilities.

Samsung is reportedly looking to integrate GAIA with processing-in-memory of PIM, the next-generation DRAM technology it's working on which will enable those memory chips to perform computations on stored data itself.

This is a novel idea, for sure, and will certainly deliver considerable improvements for on-device AI on PCs. It will be particularly useful for products offered in emerging markets where price may be a limiting factor. PC makers would be able to utilize this chip alongside more modest hardware and still deliver meaningful AI experiences.
