The first photo of Samsung's upcoming SmartThings Station has emerged through an FCC application. It's not very pretty or revealing of the device itself; nevertheless, it is the first photo of the actual device and confirms its overall shape. Moreover, the FCC application confirms a few details about the SmartThings Station's connectivity features and the presence of wireless charging capabilities.
The SmartThings Station has a rectangular shape with rounded corners. This design detail was confirmed by the photo and the documents pertaining to the FCC label. The SmartThings Station is a bit difficult to see in the FCC photo below due to the overlay of the geometry for radiation patterns. But even so, the photo gives us a rough idea of what the device looks like. It's a square slab of tech.
Connectivity features revealed, wireless charging confirmed
We told you some weeks ago that the SmartThings Station carries model number “EP-P9500,” which means it should have wireless charging capabilities. At least, in theory, judging by Samsung's previous uses of the “EP-P” model number for wireless chargers.
And sure enough, the FCC documents confirm that the SmartThings Station has Zigbee and WPT (Wireless Power Transfer) capabilities, along with Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac connectivity.
The FCC hasn't revealed any details regarding wireless charging speeds, and as usual, there's no evidence of when Samsung may want to release this device. We're guessing that the company will introduce this SmartThings wireless charger around the Galaxy S23 unveiling in early February, but there's no way to be sure. We'll have to wait and see.
In any case, this could be the first device of its kind, so we're looking forward to learning more about its features and how it will add to the SmartThings platform. It may be capable of communicating with the SmartThings mobile app and allow users to monitor the charge levels of their Galaxy devices and perhaps even turn wireless charging On and Off remotely.
