When Dark Mode arrived on Android and iOS in 2019, developers quickly supported it in their apps, and Snapchat was one among those developers. However, it added support for the Dark Mode only to its iOS app, leaving Android users disappointed. Eventually, Snapchat added support for the Dark Mode feature to its app for Android but locked it behind the Snapchat+ premium subscription, which costs $4/month.
Well, not anymore. Snapchat’s Android app now offers Dark Mode for free for everyone.
Snapchat gets Dark Mode on Android for free
The latest change in the app was first spotted by Shubham on Twitter (via 9To5Google). According to screenshots shared by the developer, the Snapchat app for Android now allows users to apply dark mode to the interface even if they don’t have a Snapchat+ subscription. This comes as great news for people who use the social media platform on their Android device for a long period of time, as the dark mode will help them to reduce strain on their eyes.
Snapchat is making the Dark Mode free with an update to the app (v12.46.0.51). To activate Dark Mode, go to Settings > App Appearance and choose Always Light. The app will now tell you to restart it to apply the change. Now click on the Restart Now button to apply the Dark Mode.
Do note that once you apply the Dark Mode, the app won’t switch back to Light Mode automatically when you apply the light theme on the OS level. You have to switch back to Light Mode in Snapchat manually.
