While Samsung's flagship smartphones pack top-of-the-line hardware, they're not particularly revered as gaming-ready devices. Both the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21 series were quite the scorchers under gaming loads. However, things might be better off with the Galaxy S22 series if a noted tipster is to be believed.
Ice Universe took the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered Galaxy S22 Ultra for a spin and found that it holds its own fairly well under sustained load. The game in question was Genshin Impact, one of the most graphically demanding games for mobile devices. The phone didn't seem to thermal throttle unlike the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which sent an overheating notification after some time.
Initial Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 benchmark scores painted a grim picture of the chipset. Many blamed it on Samsung's 4nm node on which the chip is based. While thermals could still plague the Snapdragon silicon, things aren't nearly as bad this time around, as detailed by some reviews of the Moto Edge X30, the world's first phone to run the Snapdragon SoC.
However, that still leaves us with lingering doubts about the Exynos 2200-powered Galaxy S22 variants. While it will pack a likely superior AMD Radeon GPU, gamers will be eager to find out how it performs under stress, especially in titles like Genshin Impact. Ice Universe has stated that some new information about the Exynos 2200 will emerge later today, so stay tuned for that.
