In a new post on X/Twitter, Sony has announced that people will be able to log into their PlayStation account using passkeys starting later today. On a support page, the company further reveals that the support for passkeys will be available on the PlayStation website, in PlayStation apps, and on PlayStation devices (via MacRumors).
Once people set up a passkey for their account on PlayStation, they will be able to log into that account from their Android phone by verifying their identity using biometric authentication, such as using a fingerprint scanner, and device pin/pattern/password. If you have an iPhone, you will be able to log in using Face ID, Touch ID, and device passcode.
Passkeys are considered more secure and convenient compared to passwords. Currently, passkeys are available on Android 9 and newer, iOS 16 and newer, iPadOS 16 and newer, and MacOS Ventura and newer. Lately, many companies have added support for passkeys, including Google, Microsoft, Best Buy, PayPal, and eBay.
