Samsung earned some valuable points when it began rolling out Android 12 ahead of its rivals, but the company lost them just as quickly once it halted the update due to unforeseen issues.
The Android 12 update doesn't seem to have been properly tested before Samsung greenlit it for public release on the Galaxy S21 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The company had to halt the rollout due to bugs and compatibility issues with Google Play services, all of which cropped up post-release.
Samsung and Google have addressed the problems and the update process has since resumed. Even the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Galaxy S20, and the Galaxy Note 20 are now getting Android 12 and One UI 4.0 in select European countries. But, there's a caveat.
With all the issues that have surrounded this release so far, it wouldn't hurt to be extra careful. So, moving forward, we're advising every Galaxy device user to back up their data before going ahead and updating their devices to Android 12 and One UI 4.0. Do this, and you might be able to avoid a massive headache in case things do go wrong.
Back up your personal data before you update to Android 12 One UI 4
You can back up your personal data on a PC using Samsung Smart Switch, or you can back up data on external storage (where applicable) via the phone's Settings app.
The universal backup method for Galaxy device users is through Samsung Cloud. Just open the Settings app, access Accounts and backup, then tap Back up data and select the toggles associated with the apps you wish to back up.
You can also store your Gallery contents by setting up Cloud sync, i.e., connecting your Samsung account to Microsoft OneDrive. Open the Gallery settings, tap Cloud Sync, and follow the on-screen prompts.
Of course, backing up your personal data before updating your Galaxy phone to Android 12 won't guarantee that you won't run into any issues with the firmware. But at least you'll know that your data is kept safe in case you need to perform an unscheduled factory reset.
