Samsung phones allow you to access an AI assistant by just pressing and holding the side button. Among the popular AI voice assistants on the market, you can choose from Samsung’s Bixby, Google’s Gemini, and Perplexity.
Unfortunately, these phones didn’t give you the option to select one of the best chatbots available at the moment, ChatGPT. That’s because ChatGPT didn’t support the functionality to be set as the default digital assistant app. Well, not anymore.
ChatGPT can now be set as the default digital assistant app on Android
The latest beta version of ChatGPT (version 1.2025.070) for Android allows it to be set as the default digital assistant app. With that, Samsung phones will now allow you to summon ChatGPT when you press and hold the side button.

According to 9To5Google, when you set ChatGPT as the default digital assistant app and press and hold the side button, the ChatGPT app opens instead of just an animation popping up to take your input. But it quickly disappears and a bubble overlay pops up.
Considering that, it doesn't seem to be as seamless or smooth as Bixby of Gemini at the moment. But that’s expected from a beta version of an app. Hopefully, ChatGPT will make the experience better with future versions of the app.
