Switching from an iPhone to a Galaxy will get easier

Switching between platforms is never easy, but the EU (European Union) is trying to make things easier to promote competition and stop monopolies. To comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is making switching data from an iPhone to an Android phone easier.

This means you can easily switch your data from an iPhone to a Galaxy device in the future.

Apple is developing solutions for easier data transfer from iPhone to Android

As a part of its DMA Compliance Report, Apple has revealed in its Non-Confidential Summary that it is making changes to iOS to improve data portability between iOS and “different operating systems.” Apple plans to bring this change sometime in the fall of 2025. This document was first discovered by The Verge, revealing that Apple is making other changes to comply with the EU's DMA, which comes into effect this week.

The company won't make a tool of its own, but other operating system builders can use tools provided by Apple to extract user data and build their own tools.

Apple iOS App Store Safari Data Transfer EU DMA

Google currently offers a Switch to Android app that helps transfer data, including contacts, free apps, notes, photos, text messages, and videos. However, it doesn't support the transfer of alarms, documents, call logs, eSIMs, files, passwords, wallpapers, and web browser bookmarks. Hopefully, the upcoming iOS change will help transfer those types of user data as well.

Samsung could use those upcoming iOS improvements to improve Smart Switch

From what we understand, Apple could release a standard way (or APIs) that other brands can use to develop data transfer tools. We expect Samsung to use those improvements to improve the Smart Switch app for data transfer.

Some of Apple's solutions to improve data portability include a “browser switching solution” to transfer data between web browsers on the same device. This feature will be available in late 2024 or early 2025. By March 2025, it will also be possible to change the default navigation system for iPhones in the EU.

Gboard to get a more uniform-looking Dynamic Color theme

Google’s keyboard app for Android, Gboard, has been offering support for the Dynamic Color theme for quite some time now. Super HDR images from Galaxy phones will be compatible with iPhones, Macs

Earlier this year, Samsung introduced the capability to capture Super HDR photos using the Galaxy S24 series. While this new format works on all high-end phones and tablets that come pre-installed with Android 14, it wasn't compatible with Apple's devices. That is changing now, as Apple has released compatibility with the ISO 21496-1 standard. Apple's […]

Google to follow Samsung’s lead by using custom chips for smartwatches

Qualcomm was way too slow in bringing advanced chips for smartwatches, and that is when Apple took a huge leap forward. Samsung didn't depend on Qualcomm and developed in-house Exynos chips for Galaxy Watches. While Google switched from Exynos to Snapdragon chips for second and third-generation Pixel Watches, it could switch to in-house chips in […]
