A lot of Samsung Galaxy smartphones get new software updates every month. Samsung releases monthly security patches for a lot of its mid-range phones and all of its flagships in the first couple of years after they hit market shelves, and some of these updates also bring new features, bug fixes, and general improvements, in addition to a new version of Android once every year for eligible devices.
Samsung also releases updates for its smartwatches, which is to be expected, but it seems that the coverage of these updates by some websites has led Galaxy Watch owners to believe that their smartwatch is supposed to get monthly updates similar to Galaxy smartphones.
Articles with titles such as “Galaxy Watch 4 gets April 2023 update” can be found with a quick Google search, and those titles can be misleading. Samsung does not release monthly updates for its smartwatches, and that applies to newly launched watches and those that have been in the market for some time.
Galaxy Watch updates do not follow any particular release schedule
The reason is simple: Samsung is not in the habit of releasing regular feature updates for its smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches, and since wearables don't need regular security patches like Android phones and tablets, there are no monthly or even quarterly updates for Galaxy smartwatches.
Galaxy Watch updates, which can fix bugs, introduce new features, or both, don't follow any particular schedule and are instead released randomly without any fanfare. Samsung only announces major updates that bump the version number of the watch's operating system.
So if you own a Galaxy smartwatch, don't be disappointed if it isn't getting updates every few weeks, because that's by design. When your Galaxy Watch does get an update, you will learn about it here on SamMobile so be sure to check back from time to time!
