Threads by Instagram has finally started testing compatibility with other Fediverse-based social media platforms that use the ActivityPub protocol. When Threads, an X (formerly Twitter)-like social media platform, was launched a few months ago, Instagram announced that it would bring compatibility with ActivityPub services, like Mastodon and Pixelfed, in the future.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has now announced that it has started testing ActivityPub compatibility for Threads. As a start, the company is testing the ability to view Threads posts on other ActivityPub-based social media services. He said that compatibility with other services will give people more choice on how and where they want to interact while also offering more reach for Threads posts. In August, Threads made it possible to verify a user's Threads account via Mastodon.

ActivityPub compatibility has been on the Threads team's to-do list since the start, and Instagram head Adam Mosseri said that compatibility with Fediverse will be the key to newer-generation content creators. Mark Zuckerberg also claims that he believes that interoperability between different platforms will make the content flow seamless, which is better for all social media services.
Despite promises from Adam Mosseri, Mark Zuckerberg, and other Meta executives, critics believe that Threads will never be a fully Fediverse platform. We can start believing Meta's claims only once it brings the ability to let users post on Threads using Mastodon or other ActivityPub-based social media services.
