Update breaks some Samsung smart fridges, resulting in spoiled food

When a fridge breaks, typically it's because one of the many hardware components fails. On smart fridges, like the ones Samsung makes, this can happen due to a faulty software update.

Some Samsung smart fridge owners in South Korea found this out the hard way when an update rolled out by the company completely shut down their fridges, leading to the food inside being spoiled.

According to reports out of South Korea, Samsung has halted the release of this faulty software update after issues were reported by several owners. The update caused the fridges to stop working entirely and thus spoiling the food that was stored inside.

Some users experienced other issues, such as the automatic door-opening feature not working or the internal light being unable to turn on.

Samsung confirmed the issue on its forums, highlighting that the error occurred during the testing process for a refrigerator software update. It appears that this update was rolled out during the testing phase. Samsung has halted the release immediately and is now advising affected users to contact its service center.

It will hopefully be able to fix the issue for them on a priority basis, as South Korea's Chuseok holiday falls on this Friday. With food being an integral part of these events, the nuisance value of this issue is certainly a lot more during this weekend.
