Vivo is bringing a pair of foldables to compete with Galaxy Z Flip 4, Fold 4

Vivo will launch two new foldable phones—Vivo X Flip and Vivo X Fold 2—in China on April 20, 2023. The X Fold 2, as the name suggests, is a book-like foldable smartphone, and it will go up directly against the Galaxy Z Fold 4, whereas the X Flip is a clamshell foldable smartphone and it will be a direct competitor to the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

We already have a fair bit of idea about how the competition between the X Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will look like, thanks to a previous leak that revealed the phone’s display, processor, RAM, storage, battery capacity, and charging details. What we didn't know were its camera specs, which are important in determining if the X Fold 2 is an all-rounder like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 or just a one-trick pony like many other foldable devices.

Today, we get to know a little bit about the cameras as well as the build of the X Fold 2, courtesy of 91Mobiles and Ishan Agarwal. Vivo X Flip’s key specifications have been revealed, too, giving us a clearer picture of how the fight between Vivo’s first foldable clamshell and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will look like.

Vivo X Fold 2 camera is taking a backseat

The Vivo X Fold 2 will have three cameras at the rear: a 50MP primary sensor with an F1.75 aperture, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with a 47mm focal length. This camera setup looks similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, there’s no information on how many of these cameras will have OIS, which will play an important role in determining the image quality, especially in low-light conditions.

Even if you consider the primary and telephoto cameras have OIS, the rear camera setup on the X Fold 2 doesn’t look any better than the one of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The same goes for the selfie camera. According to the leak, the X Fold 2 will have a 16MP front-facing camera, which we are assuming is the same sensor we see on many Chinese smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 not only has a better sensor for selfies on the cover display, but it also gets a 4MP under-display camera on the inner display, which offers better visuals.

The Vivo X Fold 2 measures 161.3 x 73.4 x 13mm (6 to 6.7mm when unfolded) and weighs 280g. So, taller, wider, thicker, and heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Not very impressive, is it?

Vivo X Flip complete specifications leak

Vivo X Flip

The Vivo X Flip has a 6.74-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and support for HDR10. The cover display will measure 3 inches diagonally. While the main display seems to be on par with the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the cover display is significantly bigger and will be much more useful. It is worth mentioning that the main display of the X Flip will have an under-display fingerprint scanner.

While the Vivo X Fold 2 features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, the Vivo X Flip gets the older Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The leak claims that the phone will be offered in 256GB and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage versions, and both of these variants will have 12GB LPDDR5X RAM. Although there’s no word on the software, expect the X Fold 2 and the X Flip to ship with Android 13.

As for imaging, the X Flip has a dual-camera setup at the rear with a 32MP primary sensor featuring an F1.75 aperture and a 12MP ultrawide camera with an F2.2 aperture and 108-degree FoV. For selfies, it has a 32MP front-facing camera. The phone will measure 166.4 x 75.3 x 8.2mm and weighs 200g. It will come with black, gold, and purple color options. The leak also claims that the X Flip will feature a 4,400mAh battery with 44W charging speed.

Going by these specifications, it looks like the Vivo X Fold 2 and Vivo X Flip will be the closest competitors to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4. However, only four months after their launch, Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5, both powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. We’ll get to know who will come out on top only once these smartphones hit the market.
