WhatsApp gains option for pinning messages inside conversations

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps for mobile devices. But before its acquisition by Facebook in 2014, WhatsApp provided a bare-bones experience and would get new features once in a blue moon. Facebook's acquisition didn't change much about the app, at least in the first few years, which let alternate messaging apps such as Telegram gain more footing.

But now, new features for WhatsApp are released every few months. Most of these features tend to already exist in other popular messaging apps, but WhatsApp has been closing the gap rather quickly. This week, the beta version of the app is getting an update with yet another new feature: WhatsApp now allows you to pin messages at the top of conversations.

WhatsApp will be able to pin conversations and individual messages

Being able to pin conversations at the top of the app's home screen is something WhatsApp has supported for a while, and it is now expanding its scope to include the ability to pin individual messages. To do so on a Galaxy phone and other Android devices, the user will have to long press on the desired message, tap the three dots at the top right of the screen, and select the Pin option.

WhatsApp pin messages feature

Like the mute feature, WhatsApp will let you select how long a message will remain pinned. In its current iteration, you can pin messages for 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days, not indefinitely, though this could change with future updates.

The latest WhatsApp beta update also redesigns its share menu, as you can see in the screenshot above. This isn't a substantial change, but it does add a modern flavor to WhatsApp's default user interface, which is currently a mishmash of old and new UI elements.

The version number for the newest WhatsApp beta is 2.23.21.4, and there will probably be a few updates to the beta app before Samsung brings the features mentioned above to the stable, non-beta version of WhatsApp.
